Thank you for sharing your approach to keeping all of these things in check, and with how you allow yourself a “drink” every now and then. I am doing an experiment around all this that I’m calling Dry January (Brain Rot Edition), and I have to agree: putting, and keeping, the phone down after dinner, and leaving it there until morning, is incredible (if you can resist its allure).
You’re one of about three digital things that I still read, whereas I’ve never subscribed to a greater number of print magazines. And if your newsletter came on paper and arrived in my mailbox once/week, I’d probably pay 3x for it. Then again, it’s hard to argue against embedded links, a legit shortcoming of print media.
Great stuff, JD. And this interview with Harris's media guru, Eric Adelstein, might be right up your alley. Excerpt: "Lewis Powell wrote a memo in 1971 that said basically, 'Capitalism free enterprise was under assault. And if we didn't as conservatives, business people, corporations didn't fight back, they would be subsumed.' Well, they fought back, Michael, and it has been one of the most successful and underreported fights over the last 50 years. They have created a conservative media ecosystem."
I love how Jason Kottke has approached this by documenting what he's been digesting periodically. Great way to find out about stuff to check out, and also an accountability check when binging on junk food. Also, websites can be really great! I wish more people remembered that.
Hell yes to the BEE pod! And hell yes to your newsletter, Jason.

Ha! Thanks Will.

miss Google Reader every damn day
I’m also planning on looking into RSS feeds, which maybe has been the Google Reader we needed all along?
When it comes to my media diet, I use two main sources:
- Substack for, well, all the Substack newsletters
- Stoop Inbox, an email inbox but only for newsletters and briefs
Retreating to both of those have been helpful time away from social media, email abysses, etc.
Hope this helps!
