I’ve been trying to clean my office over the last few weeks. It’s not a huge space, but it’s mine. I can close the door and have a window I can just stare out at, but it’s also full of books. I counted over 500 a year ago, not including the cases of magazines and little knickknacks I’ve got on the shelves in front of the books including Bart Simpson and Snoopy action figures, multiple cups filled with old pens, a few old baseball cards that are likely worth money again since that market has gone back up.
I like clutter. I’ve made no secret of that, but I’m also realizing I’ve been working from this same space for over three years and I need more room to myself so I’ve been trying to pack up and store some of my books. It’s not that easy. I keep looking at every spine and giving myself the old Marie Kondo, trying to figure out what brings me joy and what doesn’t, realizing there’s a very specific reason each and every book that’s in my office is there. I love them all. I was very conscious in my decisions about buying and keeping each one that’s around me, so I’m worried I’ll end up failing at this quest.
Whatever happens, it’s a good way to block out the dying days of summer. Nothing is happening right now. We’re filling our days eating tomatoes and waiting for mug shots to drop. It’s sort of weird and I can’t wait for a little movement. And with that in mind, before I get to the weekly roundup, I’m going to be doing a paid subscriber post on September 6th, Diamond’s Guide to Autumn. I’d say it’s going to be hot, but more like moderate, maybe a little chilly, but definitely a little cozy. If you want to get in on it, I’m still running a special on paid subscriptions for a few more days, so get in on it!
