The Melt Presents: Bad Guys #1
My first live event is all about Marty Scorsese's "Casino"
I’m kicking off the next Tinned Fish Book Club selection by presenting the first ever event put on by The Melt. Join me as we explore what makes Martin Scorsese’s 1995 masterpiece about sinful people in Sin City so enjoyable even with all the hands getting smashed, demanding of more blueberries in muffins, and heads getting squeezed in a vice. This is the first installment of a new series I’m calling Bad Guys, an exploration into crooks, criminals, con artists, crazies, killers, anti-heroes, and why we can’t get enough of them. For the first installment, we’re starting with Casino to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Marty’s film and Nicholas Pileggi’s book that inspired it. After the event, I’ll be reading the book and including all sorts of supplemental materials available for paid subscribers who want to read along.
Everything starts on December 11th at P&T Knitwear. I’ll be giving a little presentation on the real Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal who inspired Robert De Niro’s Ace Rothstein character. Joining me will be author Megan Abbott, we’ll be chatting about Sharon Stone’s iconic portrayal of Ginger. We’ll also have menswear expert Dan Hakimi breaking down De Niro’s suits, Jayson Buford looking at Joe Pesci’s brand of on-screen violence, as well as baker and author Tanya Bush talking with me about how difficult it would be to make blueberry muffins to Lefty’s specifications. The whole thing starts at 7 PM, costs six dollars to get in, and there will be free Entenmann’s provided including, yes, blueberry muffins.

Any chance of a virtual option? Would love to listen in from Boston!
